The month of Ramadaan is Allah's specific reward and gift to the Muslim Ummah. It is so bacause in it the revelation of Qur'aan commenced and in it the Prophet was ordered to announce his Prophethood. In gratitude for the beginning of the Qur'aan's revelation and announcement of the final prophethood the Ummah has been ordered to fast in this month. Allah (SWT) says:

O you who believe, Fasting is prescribed upon you as it was prescribed upon those before you, that you may become pious.
(Q:2:183)

The prophet himself explained the importance of Ramadaan in the following way:

'If they were to know the importance of Ramadaan they would wish for the whole year to be Ramadaan'. (Musnad Abu Ya`laa)

By chaining the devils and ordering the human to come to Allah's door, a complete programme of betterment is established so that the dark veils of neglect can be lifted and the human can become closer to the forgiveness and proximity of His Lord. This is the purpose of the Human's life. Fasting is not simply the giving up of eating and drinking but it's about becoming pure from apparent and concealed errors.

The best way to spend the days and nights of Ramadaan is the way the Prophet chose because he was well aware of Allah's desire and pleasure and the importance of Ramadaan. Hence the need to know what were his actions so that we too can follow him in observing the month of Ramadaan and attain Allah's infinite reward and favours.

If we can truly spend our Ramadaan in this way, then not just the whole year but our whole life will become blessed and full of Barakah. It is in Ramadaan that we have the opportunity to listen to the whole Qur'aan in the Taraaweeh prayer. We also have the chance to undertake night vigils and I`tikaaf. If only we could continue the habits of Ramadaan into the whole of the year. I pray that with His mercy and the Tawassul of the Prophet, Allah grants us the ability to act according to the teachings of the Sharee`ah.
